Production starts at Husky Dee Valley Thermal Project

Production is underway at Husky Energy’s Dee Valley thermal project.

It is the second of six 10,000 barrel-per-day (bpd) thermal bitumen projects to come online from 2018 to 2022.

“Dee Valley is the latest in our deep portfolio of repeatable, small-scale Lloyd developments that provide low-cost, reliable feedstock for our Upgrader, asphalt refinery and U.S. refineries,” said CEO Rob Peabody said in a press release.

He said the projects have direct access to the Lloydminster refining hub and can be transported via pipeline to other markets and refineries in Canada and the United States.

Oil production for Husky in Saskatchewan is not subject to the government-mandated production cap in Alberta, the organization said.

Dee Valley will ramp up through year-end and increase Husky’s thermal production in Saskatchewan to 90,000 bpd.

Dee Valley follows Husky’s Rush Lake 2 Lloyd thermal project, which started production in October 2018 and achieved its 10,000 bpd design capacity the following month. Current production is approximately 11,000 bpd.

Four more thermal projects are being advanced in Saskatchewan through 2022 with a combined design capacity of 40,000 bpd.
