People Advocating for Children with Exceptionalities hosting annual fun run at provincial park

People Advocating for Children with Exceptionalities (PACE) is hosting their annual Setting the PACE Race on September 7 at Meadow Lake Provincial Park.

PACE is a local, non-profit organization comprised of families based in Meadow Lake who are supporting each other in raising children with challenges due to varying abilities. The children are affected by diagnoses such as Down Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Cystic Fibrosis and Muscular Dystrophy.

PACE Board Director and Race Director Bluesette Campbell said they are all about building a community of support.

“We try to create an inclusive community that is very supportive and spreading awareness about the issue of children with exceptionalities” she said.

The organizations objective is to reach out to all families who are experiencing difficulty in raising a child and connecting them with the support they need. The non-profit holds monthly meetings every Monday at 7 p.m. at the Meadow Lake Hospital where they host speakers, workshops and group activities.

The race will include a 100K bike ride, full and half marathon, 10K, 5K, and 3K events. Bikes, runners, strollers, rollers and walkers are all welcome to participate.

This will be the eleventh year for the event that has grown from 15 participants in its first year to over 150 runners participating in the last few years.

“We had one year where we had 150 or close to 160 people, which [came as a surprise]. I imagine it will sustain around 100 people but we can accommodate up to 200 if we had to,” Campbell said.

There will be a $50 registration fee or you can enter by collecting pledges with all proceeds benefiting PACE locally. Families can be registered with one pledge sheet per family. There will be race shirts and hoodies available for purchase at the event.

Campbell said organizations like PACE and events like the Setting the PACE Race are important to have in areas like Meadow Lake as they help establish a network of families who can use each other as support and help with the stresses of raising a child with a disability.

Race day registration will be available for anyone who is interested in attending this year.
