The Town of Tisdale and its regional landfill is one of 12 recipients of funding from the Canadian government and Saskatchewan under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.

On Wednesday, Sept. 4 the governments announced the $32 million of funding will be committed to the projects that include the Town of Tisdale’s Regional Landfill Expansion. Town of Tisdale CAO Brad Hvidston said the funding is huge for them and their partners involved in the landfill.

“With the new environmental regulations and things being tougher and tougher to manage your own landfill,” Hvidston told northeastNOW. “Regional landfills just makes more sense.”

The project includes a new landfill cell and leachate pond to control some of the water runoff, a new compost area, and the equipment associated with keeping those running.

According to a release, Ottawa will provide about $2,131,200 worth of funding, while the provincial government will put forward about $1,775,822. That leaves about $1,420,978 coming from the Town of Tisdale, totalling a $5,328,000 bill for the project. Hvidston said the funding really helps take some of the pressure off the town and their partners.

“It’s going to allow us to now move onto other projects and do other things that we need in order to grow Tisdale and our area,” he said.

Hvidston added the timeline for the project is still to be finalized with some paperwork, but they hope to start construction in the summer of 2020 and they plan to have it done within that construction year.

Through the 12 projects the governments are funding, over $39 million is coming from the Federal Government, while more than $32 million is coming from the Government of Saskatchewan.
