The future of expanding dentistry in safe hands in P.A.

Dentistry is a high tech and competitive business in Prince Albert and the city saw another operation formally open its doors Saturday.

There was plenty of gleaming grins as Dr. Robin Slowenko and his team cut the ribbon on their second Smiles Dental Centre, located at Cornerstone. He also runs one at the Gateway Mall.

“In both locations we’re now at 30 staff,” he told paNOW. “And that doesn’t include our four new associate dentists.”

Dentistry provides hundreds of direct and related jobs across Prince Albert. The city confirmed as of May this year there were 21 business licence applications or active business licences for dental-related businesses.

Among the new staff at Smiles is a specialist in intravenous sedation.

“Dr. Steven Arcand did a one-year residency where he’s trained in administering IV sedation and we’re very fortunate to have him on staff,” Slowenko said.

Modern dentistry is certainly a cutting-edge industry and Slowenko was keen to point to the locally raised team that makes up his ranks and to the bright future for the profession, especially given that dentistry will be offered at the new centralized University of Saskatchewan campus in the downtown next year.

Drs. Arcand, Jason Kopchynksi, (both graduates of St.Mary High School) and Ashley Toporowski (a graduate of Carlton Comprehensive High School) were all born and raised in the city, and Dr. Jeremy Svenkeson hails from Meadow Lake. Slowenko himself was born in Saskatoon and raised in P.A.

“I definitely have confidence in Prince Albert and total confidence in my team,” he said. “The opportunity of having dental students at the U of S campus is going to interesting and exciting as well. Having students come to P.A to work will be beneficial also.”
