Hockey season is starting to ramp up across the province.

The Meadow Lake Mustangs Junior A Hockey Club is getting set to have their tryouts for the 2019/20 season on September 20-22.

The team is looking to build off a relatively successful season last year that saw them make the playoffs but fall short in their divisional semi-final showdown.

Head Coach Marty Ross explained the team had a slow start last year in part because he joined them late, which meant they had an abbreviated tryouts and training camp.

“I didn’t start until a week before the regular season. I had to build a team in a little under a week so we had a slower start as we were a newer team coming in,” Ross said.

Despite their slow start the team continued to improve throughout the year and played very good hockey in the second half of their season.

“About half way through the season we were starting to win games and we were becoming contenders. We ended up losing out in playoffs in the final game of the semi finals of our division so I think we were fairly happy with how the season went,” Ross added.

The team has roughly half a dozen players returning from last year, which means that there are plenty of roster spots available for the players coming into tryouts this year.

Ross said that it is important to have some competition over roster spots at camp as it fosters a competitiveness needed to be successful in the league.

When asked what he is looking for in a player hoping to secure a spot on the roster for this year he said both commitment and work ethic.

“If they are willing to put in the work and are committed to the team we will do our part on helping them get to the next level. We are looking for work ethic and commitment and if they show us that there might be a spot on our team for them,” Ross explained.

The Mustangs play in a great development league that offers competitive hockey and coaches that work hard to make sure their players succeed. The team saw seven players from last year get offers from the NCAA to play college hockey in the U.S.

With full tryouts and a regular training camp this year, the Mustangs are looking to have a very successful 2019/20 season.
