Raider release two D-men, still have four overaged defenders on roster

Sep 11, 2019 | 2:00 PM

The Prince Albert Raiders defensive core got a little smaller.

The Raiders announced on their Twitter account they released a pair of 19-year-old right-handed defencemen in Konrad Belcourt and Loeden Schaufler.

Belcourt came to the Raiders last trade deadline from the Kelowna Rockets in exchange for fifth and eighth round picks in the 2019 draft. Belcourt played 20 games in the 2017-18 season with the Raiders and seven games last season before finishing off the year with the Fort McMurray Oil Barons in the AJHL.

Schaufler was acquired this past deadline by the Raiders from the Seattle Thunderbirds for an eighth round pick in the 2019 draft. Schaufler appeared in 16 regular season games for the Raiders, registering two assists. He also played in six playoff games.

The Raiders now have just eight defencemen on their current roster, and half of those are 20-year-olds.

The four overagers in question are last year’s captain Brayden Pachal, assistant captain Zack Hayes, Max Martin and Jeremy Masella. The Raiders will only be able to keep a maximum of three 20-year-olds in total, and there aren’t any 20-year-old forwards currently on the roster.

The other defencemen left on the roster are 2003-born Nolan Allan, the third overall pick in the 2018 WHL draft, the 2002-born and former first overall pick Kaiden Guhle, who went through his rookie season last year, and the 2002-born Landon Kosior and Braydon Clark who are both looking to begin their WHL careers this season.

Camping updates

Nine Raiders from last year’s championship roster were invited to NHL rookie tournaments this year.

As of Wednesday morning, we know the fates of four of the 11 Raiders that are camping.

Cole Fonstad will be returning to Prince Albert by the Montreal Canadiens. Fonstad was drafted by the Canadiens in the fifth round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.

Brayden Pachal will be attending the Vegas Golden Knights main camp as an invited player.

Parker Kelly will be attending main camp with the Ottawa Senators. Kelly signed an entry level contract with the Senators in 2018.

Noah Gregor will join the San Jose Sharks’ main camp. Gregor was signed and drafted by the Sharks.
