When social services and the RCMP are forced to apprehend children from dangerous living situations, it often happens in the middle of the night.

Sometimes, the children are forced to leave with very few items or just the clothes on their back.

To help these children, members of the Interact Rotary Club at North Battleford Comprehensive High School have collected items and filled backpacks that will be given to these children by social workers.

“Last fall, [the club] had a couple of ladies from social services come and talk and tell us what [the items] meant to the kids, so it is really dear to our hearts,” Daly Haas said.

She and ten of her colleagues gathered at the high school Saturday, formed an assembly line and stuffed blankets, flashlights, books, snacks, and toothbrushes and toothpaste into backpacks.

The club started to raise money for the items last fall and received some donations to help speed up the process.

The club focuses on both global and local issues. Last year, members collected supplies for a school in Africa.

“It means a lot knowing that it is all going to be used to help kids here in the Battlefords,” Haas added.
