Collision discussed at council’s meeting

North Battleford Mayor Ryan Bater took the opportunity in council’s meeting Monday evening to express his concerns for those involved in a collision between a 15-passenger van and a school bus earlier that day.

The incident happened at the intersection of 18 Ave. and 103 St. Police said the van involved in the collision was carrying students from Onion Lake.

Some occupants of the van were treated for minor injuries at the scene, while others were transported to Battlefords Union Hospital for precautionary measures, according to police.

Living Sky School Division confirmed there were nine elementary students on the school bus and none were injured.

“Our thoughts are with the families and everyone involved,” Bater said. “We just found out before the council meeting tonight that there were some injuries as a result of the [the accident].”

As a result of the crash, the 15-passenger van flipped over, landing on its passenger side.

Acting North Battleford Fire Chief Lindsay Holm said the school bus was carrying about 10 children, while about a dozen youth were inside the 15-passenger van.

He said crews were faced with multiple injuries as a result of the crash.

“I believe there were three ambulances on the scene to try to attend to the injured,” Holm said. “My crews assisted with treating some of the patients as well.”

Holm said most of those transported to hospital had been in the van.

The ages of those injured and the extent of their injuries is still to be confirmed.

The RCMP are investigating the cause of the collision.
