Take a tour of the world without having to leave Meadow Lake.

This weekend Meadow Lake will play host to the 10th annual Culture Days. The event promises three days of cultural activities including art, dance, music and food from an array of different cultures.

The weekend will kick off with an open mic event at the Eatery on Main on Friday from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. There will be a variety of local performances including music, poetry, and comedy. The first 40 people will be able to enjoy a free non-alcoholic drink courtesy of the Eatery.

Saturday has a host of events taking place starting with printmaking at Artistic Incidents from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Join Jinny Nieviadomy as she leads a demonstration and instructs participants to create their own bookmarks in a traditional suminigashi technique using modern materials.

There will also be some food-themed activities taking place at the Lions’ Den from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Carmen and Richard Dabels will take participants through the ingredients and techniques for a pierogi recipe. Class is limited to 10 participants. To register, contact the library.

Another food-themed event will be happening at the Meadow Lake and District Museum from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Participants will be able to try their hand at making real, old-fashioned ice cream. This is a drop-in event that is open to all ages.

The Meadow Lake Library will have a moccasin-making event taking place throughout the entire Culture Days weekend. It will be on Friday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The workshop, led by Darlene McAdam, will take participants step by step from start to finish making their very own pair of hand-made moose hide moccasins. Class is limited to 15 participants and requires attendance to all three classes. Registration is through the library.

Wrapping up the weekend of events will be the Explore Culture event taking place at the North West College from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It will be a day of dance, food, stories and cultural expression.

Chamber of Commerce Administrator Trevor Dignean talked about why events like this are important contributors to uniting a community.

“It gives the community a chance to explore the different cultures in our community through their heritage, their dance, their games, and their foods. Different events just to promote their different cultures and share with everyone what they are all about,” he said.
