Mustangs Defeat Hounds

Mustangs ‘find a way’ for sixth win in a row

It wasn’t pretty, but the Melfort Mustangs have won their sixth game in a row.

The Mustangs defeated the Notre Dame Hounds 3-1 on Saturday, Sept. 29 in Wilcox, handing Notre Dame their fourth straight loss. With the Mustangs offence rolling (28 goals in six games), Assistant Coach Trevor Logan said it was nice to be able to see some of their players show off their skill on the Olympic sized ice in Wilcox.

“We’ve got a lot of guys with some pretty good skillset and some wheels,” Logan said. “When they get a little bit more time and space to make some plays and I think we have that ability to play a different type of game in different rinks.”

The offence on this night came a few different ways. The first was a strange one that saw Ben Chase circle the offensive zone, and throw one towards the net. The puck deflected off the skate of Ben Tkachuk and past Riley Kohonick for his first career Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) goal. That gave the Mustangs the 1-0 lead, that they had heading into the second.

Tkachuk got in on the first goal of the second period as a Colby Brett shot hit the end glass and popped back out on the side of the net where Tkachuk slid it to Marco Lopez waiting back door. Lopez ripped a shot into the open spot and made it 2-0 Mustangs. Jake Hobson then got his name on the scoresheet at the 9:02 mark of the period as a very active Mustangs powerplay gave Hobson a booming one-timer at the top of the zone that found its way through a crowd, and past Kohonick to make it 3-0.

At that point however, the tables started to turn. The Notre Dame Hounds began pressing and seemed to be the better team to finish off the second frame. That followed into the third period where Notre Dame outshot Melfort 25-2. Logan said the Mustangs almost seemed to be playing not to lose rather than to win at that point.

“We just weren’t playing with confidence,” he said. “And we were just throwing pucks around we needed to be a little bit stronger on. We got on our heels and they kind of took it to us for a little while. We found a way, but it was something we definitely addressed and talked about in the room.”

Sho Takai notched a shorthanded goal for the Hounds at the 5:24 mark of the frame to make it 3-1, but that’s as close as the Hounds would get as they couldn’t seem to get by Shawn Parkinson who stopped 34 of 35 shots he saw in net for Melfort.

Melfort now improves to 6-2-0-0 on the season and are back on the ice on Tuesday, Oct. 1 in La Ronge.
