Final week of northern football before playoffs

It was an exciting win last week for the Lac La Ronge Indian Band’s Senator Myles Venne School (SMVS) Huskies who secured their first victory in the last seven years of the Northern Saskatchewan Football League.

“We had a strong team and Beauval struggled to put all of their players on the field due to injury and behaviour in the school,” Coach Steve Aldridge said. “They were a little bit short on the bench and we played well.”

The match occurred Sept. 24 and brought with it a final score of 43-0 against the Beauval Voyageurs. So far this season, the Huskies have already played the La Loche Lakers who they lost to by a score of 38-32, as well as the Ahtahkakoop Titans who they lost to by a score of 49-13. The Huskies also face off against the La Loche Lakers again today at SMVS and the six-aside playoffs will be held next week.

“If we can get through today and things are positive, then we will start looking towards the playoffs,” Aldridge said.

Also last week, the Titans beat the La Loche Lakers by 24-12 on Sept. 25, the Cumberland House Islanders beat the Creighton Kodiaks by 34-28 on Sept. 25 and the Sandy Bay T-Wolves beat the Pinehouse Lakers by 47-12 on Sept. 26.

In nine-aside action, the La Ronge Churchill Community High School Chargers hosted the Nipawin Bears last week who won by a score of 66-7.
