Ice Wolves earn first home win of the season

The La Ronge Ice Wolves made their first home win of the season Tuesday against the Melfort Mustangs.

“It was an exciting game the whole time,” Head Coach Kevin Kaminski said. “Two lead changes and we finally won in overtime and, for us, it was a big confidence builder. We’ve played some very good hockey, but we just couldn’t get over that hump to win at home. It was great for us and it gave the guys some confidence, but it was also great for fans and the community.”

The Mustangs opened the game with two scores in the first period, while the Ice Wolves were able to make three goals in the third to take the lead. Aaron Greyeyes made the first goal for the team with assists by Kyle Ford and Rowan Barnes, followed by Jake Gudjonson with assists by Grady Birk and Grant Longtin. Assisted by Daylon Mannon, Ford made the third goal for the Ice Wolves.

With another goal by the Mustangs in the third period, the game was forced into overtime but was quickly shutdown with a goal by Zach Bannister to take a 4-3 win. He was assisted by Longtin and Kevin Fillier.

“We took a couple of penalties and they capitalized on those opportunities, so we kind of dug ourselves into a hole and kind of went flat,” Kaminski said. “I thought the boys responded to a little tongue-lashing that we will be practicing at 5 a.m. if we don’t get it going, so they did that and they battled through some adversity and we found a way to win finally.”

So far this season, the Ice Wolves have three wins and seven loses and are in a three-way tie for 10th place out of 12 in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL). The team’s other two wins occurred at the SJHL Showcase in Warman last month where they beat the Kindersley Klippers 4-2 and the Melville Millionaires by 3-2. Kaminski stated it was good for the team to perform so well for the scouts in attendance there.

The Ice Wolves play next Oct. 8 where they will be on the road to take on the Notre Dame Hounds. In that time, Kaminski noted players have a long week of training ahead of them in a number of areas.

“We’ve played a lot of hockey already, so they are going to get Saturday and Sunday off to recuperate their bodies and we’re back on the ice Monday before we head out to Notre Dame,” he said.
