Yorkton/Melville PPC candidate discusses election

Oct 8, 2019 | 5:07 PM

The People’s Party of Canada candidate in the Yorkton/Melville riding is weighing in on the 2019 campaign.

Ryan Schultz is currently a councillor in the community of Young, and has chosen to dip his toes into the federal election pool.

He told northeastNOW his campaigning has gone well so far.

“I’ve met a lot of people doing the door knocking, just going around from town to town,” Schultz said. “Some people have heard of [the PPC] and some haven’t. The reception though has been really, really good. I start talking about our platform, people really seem to open up their eyes and really pay attention.”

One of the major challenges in federal politics is the mere distance that candidates travel in their constituency. The Yorkton/Melville riding stretches from southeast of Esterhazy all the way to St. Brieux and northeast of Hudson Bay.

Schultz said campaigning in the sizable riding does present a challenge.

“Just trying to find the time just to drive from one end to the other end,” he said. “I’ve split it up into little different areas so I try to stop at every single town, I put up some advertising, I try to meet the people but it’s draining.”

He said he can hit around 10 towns in a day, and that’s only a small chunk of the district.

Despite the distance between communities, Schultz said the issues are pretty similar throughout the riding, including the increasing cost of living, high taxes, the federal carbon tax, and getting pipelines built.

Schultz said he became a People’s Party candidate due to the platform laid out by party leader Maxime Bernier.

“I was a Maxime supporter for the [Conservative Party] leadership race,” Schultz said. When Bernier established the People’s Party and released their platform, Schultz continued his support.

Schultz said he likes the decentralization proposed in the PPC’s platform, leaving more money in the hands of provinces and municipalities. He said it’s a better alternative than the federal government assuming control over where the money is located.

The PPC is the party that wants people to have the most freedom when it comes to their own money, said Schultz.

“We want to keep the money in the provinces, we want to lower the cost of living for everyone by reduction of income tax, getting rid of the carbon tax, opening up interprovincial trade barriers,” Schultz said.
