Village of Meota to hold byelection for mayor, councillor positions

Oct 10, 2019 | 3:24 PM

The Village of Meota will hold a byelection in November for the mayoral and one councillor position.

As recently advertised, the village is accepting nominations for the two now vacant positions.

Nominations must be in by Wednesday, Oct. 16. Forms are available at the village office.

The positions became vacant following recent resignations. The former mayor John MacDonald resigned on Aug. 6. Former councillor Maurice Gauthier, who has been on council for a number of years, also resigned from his position soon after.

Betty Johnson is currently serving as deputy mayor for the village.

MacDonald, who served as mayor for over a decade, cited complications from what he describes as having a loss of confidence with some of the members council related to a staffing matter as part of the reason for his departure. He said he left the position on good terms.

He said the village’s books and finances are all in good order and have been audited without any issues, and are all up to date.

MacDonald said he enjoyed his time serving as mayor and taking part in many projects.

“There has been a lot of activity; the village has grown and we have progressed quite well,” he said.

Some of the projects he has been proud to participate in include helping secure a new building for the Meota and District Fire Department. MacDonald said he is pleased to see pavement installed in various parts of the village to improve access, as well as progress on a number of infrastructure upgrades.

The Meota resident is originally from Saskatoon where he retired after long-term service with the Saskatoon Police Service. MacDonald received a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2013 for his over three decades of service.

Gauthier could not be reached for comment by deadline.
