La Ronge RCMP warn public about phone calls coming from scammers

Oct 15, 2019 | 3:00 PM

La Ronge RCMP is warning the public about phone calls coming from potential scammers.

According to an RCMP media release, the local detachment has received numerous calls from concerned citizens regarding telephone scams. Scammers could be posing as Veteran’s Affairs offices, the Canada Revenue Agency, lotteries or RCMP officers.

Most recently, RCMP state citizens are reporting the Canada Revenue Agency has contacted them advising of an arrest warrant and to provide a sum of money.

Anyone who receives similar fraud calls or messages are encouraged to not provide any personal information and to end communication.

As members of the public, RCMP remind residents to never provide personal information such as credit card numbers, social insurance numbers or payment information to someone you don’t know either on the phone or social media. They recommend the public to call the RCMP if they are unsure, adding officers will never contact citizens via social media or the telephone indicating they owe money to clear an arrest warrant. RCMP note citizens should never have to pay to collect winnings of any kind.

“Remember, if it sounds suspicious, it likely is,” the media release states. “If it’s too good to be true, it likely is.”
