One more step remains for soccer teams as the provincial tournament approaches.

Schools all across Saskatchewan will be holding regional tournaments during the Oct. 18 weekend. One of those schools is St. Brieux, which is hosting the 3A Boys tournament starting on Friday.

Head Coach Brittany Berscheid said this tournament is one of the first times they’ve held a large tournament like this.

“Mostly we seem to be known for our basketball program,” she said. “So I think it’s really good that we’re starting to put soccer on the map and have a bunch of teams here to compete, and we’ve got a pretty good team so the boys seem pretty excited.”

The core group of players have been together for a while according to Berscheid. She said they’ve been together since she started coaching them in the junior ranks.

With a small community such as St. Brieux, lots of the same kids are playing many different sports. Berscheid said some of her current players are also on the football team, and will be playing basketball soon as well.

“They’re a good group, they mesh well,” Berscheid said. “And I think it’s good that they play multiple sports too.”

The Crusaders have had a good year so far, defeating every team they’ve seen except Humboldt. St. Brieux continues league play for a couple more weeks with semifinals and finals coming soon. However, to get to provincials, they’ll need to just one win. The host Crusaders have a bye into the semifinals and a win would earn them a top two spot, and a trip to provincials.

“I think it would just be a good thing for the team, and the school too,” Berscheid told northeastNOW. “Give the school a little notoriety and just have people know where St. Brieux is and who they are.”

St. Brieux will play the winner of Lake Lenore and Muenster who play Friday afternoon. On the bottom half of the bracket are Rosthern and Middle Lake.

Provincials start on Oct. 25 for the 3A Boys in Duck Lake.
