Undefeated MUCC Comets gearing up for the playoffs

The Melfort and Unit Comprehensive Collegiate (MUCC) Comets nine-man football team didn’t need to win their final game of the regular season.

Heading into their Oct. 18 game at MUCC against the Tisdale Middle and Secondary School Tornadoes, the Comets clinched their conference and guaranteed a home playoff game in the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association (SHSAA) provincial quarterfinals.

Still, the Comets finished their season with a 55-21 win over the Tornadoes, a perfect 6-0 regular season record, and a point differential of plus 274.

“It’s always nice to end your final regular season game with a win,” Comets Head Coach David Rogers said post-game. “The score reflects some pretty good play on our part but like everything we say in football: when you’re through improving, you’re through. There are a lot of things having played this game that we need to be better at.”

Some of the aspects of the Comets’ game Rogers wants to clean up leading into the post-season is not waiting until the second quarter of games to get rolling, execute offensive plays he believes to be “week one stuff,” and not take as many penalties.

“We took too many penalties today,” he said. “When you’re playing playoff football every mistake hurts.”

Despite the areas needing work, Rogers credited his Comets for keeping possession of the football, forcing turnovers, scoring touchdowns on special teams, and being able to kick field goals.

The Comets’ quarterfinal playoff game will be against the Humboldt Collegiate Institute (HCI) Mohawks, who finished with a 4-2 record and a plus 23-point differential.

Prior to the 2019 SHSAA season, MUCC and HCI were in the same conference, until HCI moved to a conference with Delisle, Martensville, and North Battleford.

“I wouldn’t say there’s familiarity with them, because every football team is different every year, but we do know their coaches,” Rogers said. “We’ve coached against them for a long time. They don’t make mistakes in execution.”

The Comets and Mohawks coaching staff traded footage of each other’s games so both can prepare for the upcoming playoff match up. Rogers said the Comets will try and clean up their deficiencies before practicing what they could use against the Mohawks.

The Comets host the Mohawks in the provincial quarterfinals at MUCC on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m.
