Melfort Mustangs forward Zack Smith is now a member of the Regina Pats in the Western Hockey League.

Smith was signed by the team today and will join them ahead of their next game on Sunday, Oct. 27 as the Pats play the Calgary Hitmen outdoors at Mosaic Place.

“Zack has really blown away expectations this season. He’s had a great start to the 2019-20 season and obviously the Regina Pats took notice,” Mustang Head Coach and GM Trevor Blevins said in a media release. “While we’re sad he’s not in Melfort anymore, he has earned this opportunity in the WHL and we’re extremely proud and excited for him”.

The 2001-born Smith was in his second season with the Mustangs after making the team as a 17-year-old last year. In 55 games last year, Smith scored nine goals and added 12 assists for 21 points. He was set to crush that number this year as he had 14 points in 15 games to start the 2019/2020 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season.

Smith also added one assist in 16 playoff games last year as the Mustangs reached the SJHL Final.

Prior to his time in Melfort, Smith spent two seasons with the Tisdale Trojans in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA League.

As for the Mustangs, they will be back in action tonight as they open up a home and home with the Nipawin Hawks.
