Stars show bark and bite in OT thriller over Terriers

Nov 2, 2019 | 11:38 PM

The Battlefords North Stars entered play Saturday with an 11-game winning streak, and will leave the weekend with a 12-game streak intact, after defeating the Yorkton Terriers 3-2 in thrilling overtime fashion at the Civic Centre to improve to an eye popping 19-1 on the season.

Stars’ forward, Quintin Loon-Stewardson led the way for his team, scoring the overtime winner and two points on the night, while Noah Form and Elijah Loon-Stewardson each chipped in with a goal apiece as well. Captain Matthew Fletcher also had another big night, picking up two helpers on the evening.

In goal, 18-year-old Austin Schwab denied 30 of the 32 shots sent his way to secure the victory.

With the win, Schwab improves to 3-0 on the season to go along with a staggering 1.96 goals-against average and .929 save percentage through his opening three starts.

While the defeat snaps Yorkton’s five-game winning streak, the Terriers do still manage to pick up a single point in the loss. Yorkton is now 10-9-1 on the season.

Yorkton opened the scoring on the night, as forward, Jordan Guiney registered his fourth of the season from in tight on a nice move to make it 1-0 for the visitors.

Despite the Stars outshooting the Terriers 12-9 in the opening frame, the score remained 1-0 Yorkton into the first intermission.

In the second, however, the Battlefords were rewarded for their persistence.

Blue liner, Noah Form picked up his fourth of the season at the 9:13 mark of the second, just moments after a North Stars’ power play had expired. Capitalizing on a shot from the point with traffic in front, the Saskatoon product’s tally knotted the game up, 1-1.

But the stalemate did not last long. Just 15 seconds later, off the ensuing face off at center, the Stars marched down ice again to add to their lead, courtesy of Elijah Loon-Stewardson.

Loon-Stewardson picked up his seventh of the season on a close-in play in front of the Yorkton goal, converting a Quintin Loon-Stewardson pass in prompt fashion to reverse the lead entirely, this time in favor of the Stars at 2-1.

Much like the first period, the second would end as a one-goal contest.

In the third, though, the Terriers turned to their captain to pull them even. Chantz Petruic, who entered the evening as the league-leader in both goals (18) and points (38), scored his 19th of the campaign on a two-on-one rush to make it 2-2.

The goal, which came at the 11:59 mark of the third, served as the veteran’s second point of the night, to give him 40 points on the year. It was also the only goal of the final regulation frame, meaning the game was destined for overtime.

In the extra frame, it then took just one chance, and 18 seconds, to decide the night’s fate thanks to the heroics of Quintin Loon-Stewardson.

Picking up the puck from his own territory shortly following the faceoff win, defenceman Matthew Fletcher started the play rushing up ice with a look of determination in his eyes to open OT.

Striding over the center-ice red-line, he then brushed a pass ahead to Quintin Loon-Stewardson in full swing over the offensive blue line.

Blazing in as a left-hand shot down the left-side boards, Loon-Stewardson then capped the night in the blink of an eye with a heavy wrister, blistering a shot off the goalie’s blocker – and over the goalie – with still just enough steam to trickle over the line; 3-2 Stars, the final.

Terriers’ goaltender Ryan Ouellette made 42 saves on 45 Battlefords’ shots in the loss.

The North Stars will now get a few days off, before returning to action Tuesday night against the Humboldt Broncos at the Civic Centre. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 7:15 p.m. with puck drop at 7:30 p.m. on NAPA North Stars Hockey on 1050 CJNB-CJNS.
