Blaze destroys garage in Melfort

The investigation is underway into an early morning fire in Melfort.

Fire Chief Jason Everitt told northeastNOW they received the call of the fire in the 100 block of Higgins Ave. W. just before 5 a.m on Monday, Nov. 4.

“It was a detached garage that was fully involved upon our arrival,” said Everitt. “Crews were able to knock it down without the fire extending to any other structures or houses in the immediate area.”

There was an additional challenge for fire crews, as a power line had burned off and was still live.

Everitt thanked SaskPower for managing that risk for them.

The garage is destroyed, but Everitt said there is still a danger.

“Part of it is still standing so there’s a bit of a risk there,” said Everitt. “We’ve got it taped off, so we just ask people to make sure that they stay away from that.”

There were no injuries in the fire, and the cause has not been determined.

Everitt said he appreciated people that were near the scene stayed away to allow fire crews to complete their task.
