NBCHS curling teams looking for continued success with new season ahead

The North Battleford Comprehensive High School (NBCHS) curling teams got underway with practices this week in preparation for the fast approaching curling season.

While the teams will likely not see their first game-action until the Bonspiels in December, the remainder of the month ahead will give the curlers an opportunity to re-acquaint themselves on the ice.

For many it will also offer an opportunity to get accustomed to the game maybe for the first time.

Last year was one to remember for the curling program at NBCHS. Both the school’s junior mixed team and senior boys team, each took home a gold medal performance at Districts.

While the victory capped the season on a high for the junior squad, the senior boys then moved on to Regionals, where they again claimed a podium finish, winning silver. With the top-two outcome, the team then advanced to the provincial stage, where they closed out the campaign with a bronze medal win at Provincials.

While there will be no returning players from the senior team this season, coach of both the senior and junior teams, Evan Reid said he hopes the school’s recent success in the curling ranks has helped inspire more young people to get involved with the sport.

He said judging by the early look of things, the competition should be one to keep an eye on with another high-potential group this season.

“We do have a lot of promise in our younger players and I am excited for them,” Reid said. “[That being said,] we are young. If I am able to keep them together for a number of years we can have really solid curling teams again.”

With still some time to go before the season officially kicks off, the coach said NBCHS has the potential to field both a mixed and boys team at the junior level if another player or two were to join curling this year. That would give the school three teams including the senior boys team.

Whether they do end up going with three teams this season, or just the two, Reid said with so many new players it will be important over this next month to get everyone to feel comfortable using their voices to communicate on the ice.

“Probably one of the biggest things we work on with our curling teams is our communication,” he said. “Especially with young curlers, sometimes they can be very shy to do something like call out the weight on a shot like the professionals do. They are shy for fear of making a mistake, but that communication is an essential skill and is usually what we are working on in addition to mechanics.”
