Study underway to determine fate of local landfills

Mayor Duane Favel is reassuring residents around Ile-a-la-Crosse that municipal waste could be consolidated into one regional landfill to meet environmental regulations and they will work to minimize the financial impact on residents.

A feasibility study is underway to decide whether two landfills for Northwest Saskatchewan would suit local municipalities as current landfill permits are expiring.

The study will examine whether a newly constructed landfill, hauling waste to existing landfills and curbside pick-up would suit 18 municipalities and five First Nations. Rapid View landfill is not affected by this study.

Project Manager of the Northwest (155) Regional Landfill Group Glen Gillis said it is too soon to tell what the impact to these communities will be, but they will have a better idea of where things are headed once the studies are complete.

“We won’t have comments from the community until the end of November and that will impact which direction we take,” he said.

The report is expected to be complete by November 13, though residents are able to provide feedback about the project until the end of the month.

According to the mayor’s office, comments can be directed to BCL Consulting group in Saskatoon.
