Lest we forget: Remembrance Day personal to many

Nov 8, 2019 | 3:40 PM

Remembrance Day is personal for many. For Alloha Twanow, it’s a reminder of her father’s sacrifice.

Twanow is the Poppy Chair and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #76 in Meadow Lake.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Holland and Twanow remembers when her father fought in the deadly task of liberating the Netherlands from Nazi occupation.

She says when her father was granted a leave to find and visit her mother’s family, he often recalled how despite a language barrier, the Dutch people treated him kindly.

When her father took her to visit Holland in 1967, she vividly remembers the love and respect the Dutch have for Canadians.

“Everyone needs to remember and tell the stories of the past but intersperse that with ideas and things one can do and actions one can take to make the world a better place now,” she said.

The official Remembrance Day ceremony takes place at Meadow Lake Civic Centre on Monday 10 a.m. followed by two minutes of silence at 11 a.m.
