Hundreds of residents in Melfort and area filled the seats and stands of Melfort and Unit Comprehensive Collegiate’s gymnasium for Remembrance Day.

Spectators silently observed every portion of the service from the flag ceremony, to music from the piper and the community band, the Last Post, the moment of silence, readings, laying of wreaths, and finally with the retire of colours.

It was the fifth service in Melfort that Captain Rick Robins from the Melfort Salvation Army attended and spoke at. He said Melfort’s Remembrance Day service is similar to other communities’ he’s attended, and they all share the same somber message and great reminder.

“A lot of these men gave their today so that we could live in their tomorrow,” Robins told northeastNOW. “We get so busy with everything; we forget about the sacrifices that were made for us. Here, we have this time together to celebrate and remember.”

“My main topic was about hope. Too often we forget about hope and what’s important. The soldiers fought those days so people could have hope for something better than what they were living in at that time,” he said. “There was a lot of suffering, pain, and things happening that they could say ‘where is hope?’ The soldiers leaned on each other and they found hope and strength in each other, and we here today can find hope and strength in each other.”

Robins noted how great community support is for Melfort’s Remembrance Day service. He also hopes residents also take the chance to remember the sacrifices made by veterans by reminiscing with them during occasions such as Vimy Ridge Day in April and Decoration Day in June.

“I would encourage others to come out and be a part of the legion… and be able to learn and understand where they are,” he said. “Those who left and never came back, and to those who left and didn’t come back the same, we will remember them. There were many that were lost, but there are many that came back and were changed forever.”
