Spike belts, air unit, dog services used to stop high-speed driver

The North Battleford RCMP and other area police detachments used a variety of tactics including a spike belt to try to stop a vehicle first seen traveling at a high speed on Highway 16 early Sunday morning.

The individual was eventually arrested and is facing a number of charges including dangerous driving.

According to the RCMP report, an officer from the North Battleford Crime Reduction Team (CRT) first noticed the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed heading east on Highway 16 toward Saskatoon at about 12:50 a.m. on Nov. 10.

The CRT officer attempted to get closer to the suspect’s vehicle, however it continued to travel at high speeds, and moved into the westbound lane.

Soon Warman RCMP also responded and attempted to deploy a spike belt to stop the vehicle, but was unsuccessful.

The suspect was seen heading south on Township Road 390.

More officers then responded and started conducting patrols.

A description of the suspect vehicle was shared among police detachments in the area and roughly 10 minutes later, members from the Corman Park Police spotted the vehicle.

Heading in oncoming traffic

Saskatoon Police Service Air One then located the vehicle traveling in oncoming traffic along Highway 14. Then, at 1:56 a.m., SPS Air One tracked the suspect driver who was seen entering an unknown residence.

Police report, the home’s occupants did not respond to the CRT’s initial attempts to contact them using a loud-speaker and sirens.

North Battleford CRT, Biggar RCMP, Warman RCMP, RCMP Police Dog Services and Corman Park Police then entered the residence in which three occupants were located, including the suspect driver.

Flint James Vayro, 28, was taken into custody and has been charged with flight, dangerous operation, operate while prohibited, and breaching a condition of an undertaking in addition to previous assault charges.

Vayro was remanded for Provincial Court on Nov. 12 in Saskatoon.
