Veteran support needed amid poppy fund

Nov 15, 2019 | 5:00 PM

The Remembrance Day poppy campaign results for Meadow Lake are in.

Alloha Twanow, The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #76 Poppy Chair tells meadowlakeNOW this year’s campaign raised approximately $10,000.

Twanow said over the years that number fluctuated but has remained consistent for the last three years.

“Anybody can take a poppy, the idea is submitting a donation,” she said.

Supporting veterans is an effort that can be made all year though Twanow said every local branch is suffering.

Donations to the legion are used to offer support for veterans and their families, two $500 bursaries for high school students that are descendants of veterans. With approval from provincial command, the Legion makes donations to Northwest Hospital, Northland Pioneer Lodge and the Meadow Lake Ambulance Association, and offer support of activities of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets Squad #520.

“If somebody wanted to make a donation to the operation of the local branch, that is very much appreciated,” she said.

“The only thing about that is that the donor would not receive a charitable donation tax receipt because of the fact that that would be used at the branch rather than charitable donation use”

With holiday celebrations on their way, booking function facilities are an additional way to support the legion.
