Empty Stocking Fund campaign kicks off with beef-on-a-bun fundraiser

Nov 20, 2019 | 5:00 PM

The community came together to show their support for the Battlefords Empty Stocking Fund campaign that held its big kick off celebration Wednesday.

Visitors made a donation to purchase a ticket for a beef-on-a-bun lunch and dropped off a contribution of a non perishable food item for the Food Bank during the event held at Third Avenue United Church.

The Empty Stocking Fund, and Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre Executive Director Erin Katerynych said this year the goal for the organization is to raise $100,000 in funds in total for programming for Christmas and the entire year ahead, as well as about 10,000 lbs. worth of food for the Empty Stocking Fund Campaign and the Food Bank.

“Christmas is a time for sharing,” she said. “We just want to make sure that every family in the Battlefords is enjoying their Christmas like the rest of us, because it’s Canada and everybody should be able to enjoy the holiday season.”

The Christmas Hampers will be distributed on Sun., Dec. 22.

“We’re looking for people’s time, we’re looking for food, for toys, and funds,” Katerynych said. “We’re asking people to share the joy.”

In addition to Wednesday’s luncheon fundraiser and collection, several other events will take place in the community to also support the Empty Stocking Fund campaign leading up to the holiday season.

The WPD Ambulance Care in North Battleford will hold its Help Santa’s EMS Elves Cram an Ambulance toy drive for the Empty Stocking Fund Christmas Hampers.

Loraas Environmental will have a Battlefords businesses food drive again this year and will stop by people’s businesses to collect food items for the Empty Stocking Fund, for businesses that register with them in advance.

The Empty Stocking Fund 2019 Boot campaign will be running in the community to receive donations. Volunteers can sign up to help with the campaign by contacting the Food Bank on 101 Street.

For people who need a Christmas Hamper, they can submit their applications at the Food Bank on 101 Street from Nov. 25 to Dec. 6.
