Important artifacts set to return home

Some Métis artifacts are set to return to a northern community where they were originally made.

The pieces include a beaded jacket, moccasins, both beaded and embroidered along with a number of others. The jacket is over 100 years old.

“There’s so many items that we brought back,” Sherry Soll, minister of heritage and language with the Métis Nation Saskatchewan (MN-S) said.

Speaking about the items specifically, Soll said along with being older, they are also impressive because of their overall quality and how they were made.

“The embroidery on them, is so fine. It is amazing that anybody could do that, especially in the lighten stuff they had back then,” she said.

Soll explained the artifacts are making their way back to Cumberland House from Kelowna, British Columbia after a resident in the city looked to donate the items to a museum there. The curator at the museum in Kelowna then reached out to Laura Chaboyer, who has been working to gather artifacts for a museum which is set to open in the summer in Cumberland House.

The MN-S and Soll have been helping with the process of trying to get the artifacts back to the community. She said in their work to get the pieces back from Kelowna they found out about another person who had items and is interested in donating them.

“It’s really opened doors that were not there previously,” she said.

Being able to bring artifacts like these back to the community is something Soll thinks is important for the MN-S to support communities in undertaking activities which help them reclaim and rebuild their history. Soll said she is also working to help other museums around the province acquire cultural artifacts.

“Hpefully when the time comes there will be artifacts that will come our way for those places,” she said.
