Parkinson performs at peak as Mustangs defeat Bombers

There’s a logjam atop the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s (SJHL) Sherwood Division once again.

On Saturday the Melfort Mustangs defeated the Flin Flon Bombers 3-1 at the Whitney Forum, giving them 35 points on the year, the same as the Bombers.

Melfort got on the board just over four minutes in on a powerplay as Nolan Kadachuk’s shot was tipped by Colton Schell, past Bomber netminder Jacob Delorme to make it 1-0 for the visitors. Melfort dominated for most of the frame, outshooting Flin Flon 16-7, but with only the one goal to show.

In the second period, Flin Flon came back heavy and got their fair share of chances. However, Mustang goalie Shawn Parkinson was solid, stopping all 15 shots he saw in the frame. It remained 1-0 after two.

In the third, the Bombers were finally able to crack Parkinson as a rebound off a Dane Hirst shot was found by Caleb Franklin who wacked home the rebound to tie things up. Mustangs Head Coach Trevor Blevins said they were still playing well, even after giving up the goal.

“I really liked our response when they made it 1-1, I thought we were the better team for sure,” he said. “And that was huge for our group to see the confidence in that and really got going again. I think we got squeezing the sticks a little bit and maybe scared to make mistakes, but good job making it 2-1, and then locking it down at the end.”

The Mustangs made it 2-1 just four minutes after the Bombers tied the game as Adam Nobes showed great patience to find Marco Lopez in the high slot who scored his eighth goal of the season, and first in 13 games. From that point the Mustangs were able to shut things down and keep the Bombers off the scoreboard for the rest of the night, with some help from Shawn Parkinson who made some great saves in the third and stopped 32 of 33 in the win.

“He was really on today,” Blevins said. “He was quick and battled and competed. Didn’t shoot too many pucks out in front of him, so I thought he controlled his rebounds a lot more than he has in the past. Real good step for him.”

The win moves the Mustangs to 16-7-2-1 on the year, and Blevins said the win was another example of some very good road performances this season.

“We always think we’re there, or close to being there,” Blevins told northeastNOW. “And it’s just a matter of bringing the road game home I think now, as far as the compete level in tight rinks.”

Melfort has the week off before a home and home set with the La Ronge Ice Wolves that starts on Friday, Nov. 29.
