La Ronge RCMP Cpl. Brent Nicol had a smile on his face Monday as he, along with other police officers and members of the La Ronge Ice Wolves, distributed hockey equipment to young children in need.

“I’m really excited to see the faces of these young children that will get hockey equipment for the first time and get a chance to skate,” he said. “The most important thing is the kids, and getting them involved in sports and hopefully keep them away from the life of crime.”

The donation of 20 full sets of equipment with an estimated value of $300 each was made possible through a grant Nicol applied for through the NHL Players’ Association. He was encouraged to apply by Ice Wolves Head Coach Kevin Kaminski and Nicol stated there was quite a bit of work that needed to be done during the application process. It was all worth it yesterday, however, as 14 children were fitted with equipment from head to toe.

Nicol stated the children who were given the equipment were chosen with assistance from staff at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre (JRMCC). In order to qualify, he mentioned there had to be a specific need such as the parents being unable to afford the equipment on their own. The other six sets were donated to La Ronge Minor Hockey and is meant to also be given to other children in need.

“My main focus with this was to build a bridge between the RCMP and the community by being able to give to the community, and show we’re not just the guys out there arresting people and writing tickets, but we’re also in it to develop the community in a positive way,” Nicol said.

The event at JRMCC was also an opportunity for children to skate with members of the Ice Wolves. They were there to assist the children in putting on the new gear, as well as teach them some of the basics of skating.

“I haven’t played in a long time,” Nicol said. “I did when I was young and I know how much it meant to me to be able to go skate every weekend or during the week for practice. I’m looking forward to giving these children the opportunity to participate and have some fun.”
