Author writes children’s book perpetuating family dragon myth

Nobody tell her grandchildren, but La Ronge area resident Caron Dubnick has written and illustrated a children’s book for them for Christmas.

“I wrote it as a gift for my grandchildren and it sort of is about a family myth we have going here,” she said. “It’s based on a true story, not that the dragon is real, but the effort that goes into perpetuating the myth is real.”

At 24 pages, the book is called Grandpa Has a Dragon and it features a child narrator who explains everything their grandpa has told them about the dragon. Dubnick stated she started the book in January after the idea came up when she was spending holidays with her family last year. Her husband Rod took a considerable amount of effort to make his grandkids think the dragon really exists.

“It all started with grandpa building a quinzhee back in the bush, then he took them out there and he actually had a propane tank out there to throw flames,” Dubnick said. “It’s quite a production and they are young enough to not be afraid about it. It’s not a vicious dragon, it’s a friendly dragon. He just goes through a lot of effort to perpetuate the myth.”

It took Dubnick about one year to complete the book and she said it proved to be challenging because she’s not used to making illustrations for that kind of work. She called it a worthwhile artistic exercise, however, she printed 100 copies to be given to her grandchildren and other members of her extended family. There are also some copies available for purchase at the Visitor Centre in Air Ronge and Robertson Trading Ltd. in La Ronge.

“There was just a seed planted and it started off really small,” Dubnick said. “I was just going to do a few for my immediate family and then it just grew from there.”
