Fundraiser sees local men bid goodbye to beards

December is likely to feel extra chilly for two Prince Albert men.

They are both clean-shaven for the first time in nearly five years.

Original Joe’s assistant manager, Diarmuid Quill, and Saskatchewan Rush superfan, Travis Pilon, lost their beards at a Movember Fundraiser at the restaurant on Saturday. Darryl Frenette from Gil’s Barber Shop had the honour of removing the face sweaters.

“Initially it was a really good idea,” Quill told paNOW. “And then Saturday morning we were both texting each other going ‘Why did we agree to do this?’”

Ultimately, however, Quill said he was happy with the result.

“Darryl did a great job,” he said. “For a guy shaving two guys in the middle of a bar, he did a super job.”

The Saturday night event featured prizes including a VIP trip to a Saskatchewan Rush game, and signed jerseys. Saskatchewan Rush dancers also attended.

In total, $3,500 was raised for prostate cancer research.

“It’s such a good cause, and to generate so much money for it was really good,” Quill said.

He said he hasn’t decided if he’ll grow his beard back yet. In the meantime, he’ll have to find other ways to keep his face warm.
