Cree language allegation at Timber Bay School unfounded: NLSD

Dec 3, 2019 | 12:10 PM

An allegation by a janitor who stated she was told not to speak Cree at Timber Bay School is unfounded.

That’s according to Northern Lights School Division Director of Education Jason Young, who stated a note was sent home to parents and guardians of students at the school on Friday. The letter detailed the results of the investigation and some of the findings as well.

“Based on the thorough investigation, we determined the allegations were unfounded,” Young said. “The first point we made in the letter is that the school division became aware of concerns posted on Facebook and Twitter by a third party and not the employee. No complaint had ever been filed by the employee.”

Janitor Rose Bradfield spoke to larongeNOW about the incident, which occurred about two months ago. She claimed the incident did happen and she was later placed on administrative leave while the school division searched for answers. Young wouldn’t say whether or not the investigation led to disciplinary measures or if any employees involved were terminated.

Young mentioned the school division used its policies and procedures to gather information, adding they can’t ascertain facts by relying on rumours. He also said it allowed administration to take a closer look at what’s happening at that school and take the appropriate measures to address those other issues. Young believes the decision won’t cause further tension between the community and the school.

“I want to say I appreciate the cooperation of all the employees and community members when we did our investigation,” he said. “The conversation opened some discussion between the community, the school and school division. The school division will use these discussions to strengthen dialogue with parents and community members.”

larongeNOW reached out to Bradfield for comment, but didn’t hear back from her by deadline.
