‘It’s a really nice feeling’: Donations pour into Kikinahk Christmas Hamper program

Dec 4, 2019 | 4:54 PM

Three large donations to the Kikinahk Christmas Hamper program has reminded committee members what the holiday season is all about.

“Everybody is totally and pleasantly surprised this year, because we were worried about how we were going to advertise it and solicit donations,” Kikinahk Friendship Centre Executive Director Ron Woytowich said. “Cameco and Orano just stepped up big time. Cameco gave $3,000 and they have never given that much before. Orano gave $2,000 this year – same thing.”

With an additional $1,500 from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 371, the program received $6,500 in total. Woytowich said they expect to distribute about 140 hampers this month with the overall cost of the food expected to be between $8,000 to $9,000. The program has been around for decades and Woytowich noted he doesn’t remember any other time they were able to raise funds so quickly.

“We’re always looking for it when we are ready to order the turkeys,” he said. “We’re really close already and it’s a really nice feeling.”

Woytowich explained the Christmas Hamper program is designed to assist tri-community residents who need it the most. The hamper includes everything needed for a traditional holiday meal such as a turkey, potatoes, vegetables and other sides. Those interested in applying for a hamper can do so at the Kikinahk, although there are some conditions residents need to meet.

For instance, those who are applying must have children or be low-income seniors expecting family for Christmas. Those who are already receiving a turkey from another agency or organization are ineligible. The deadline to apply is Dec. 13 and hampers can be picked up at Kikinahk or will be delivered Dec. 18 between 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Anyone wishing to make a donation to the program can also do so at Kikinahk. Donations over $20 are eligible for a charitable receipt for income tax purposes.

“What we try to do is for every family during this season; we want to ensure they have one good meal,” Woytowich said.
