Mustangs open month of December on winning note

The Melfort Mustangs got back to their winning ways on Tuesday as they defeated the Melville Millionaires 2-1.

It was the Mustangs first game in the month of December after going 4-4 in November.

Melfort gave up the first goal in this one, late in the first period as Luke Nkwama found the loose puck a rifled a shot by Tanner Martin to give the Millionaires the 1-0 lead after one.

The visiting Mustangs got it back about three minutes into the frame as Adam Nobes created a chance in front and then was able to wack in the rebound for his fifth of the season. Melfort dominated most of the frame, outshooting the Millionaires 13-7, but Mustangs Head Coach Trevor Blevins said Melville was giving them a hard time at points.

“It’s always hard in this league to win,” he said. “No matter where you are, and it was good that we got it done today.”

In the third, there wasn’t a ton of shots that made it through to the netminders, as both teams were blocking an abundance of shots. However, the Mustangs got a couple of powerplays late including a too many men penalty to Melville. That was the Mustangs fourth chance on the night, and Nolan Kadachuk was able to tee up a one-timer and get it by Berk Berkeliev to give the Mustangs the 2-1 lead with just under four minutes to play. After that, Melfort locked it down, even while being shorthanded for the last 2:09 of the game.

Blevins said he felt his team deserved some more offence, but it came when they needed it.

“We had some quality chances that didn’t get rewarded, but what I was impressed about was that no one really got frustrated, everyone stayed positive,” Blevins said. “When the powerplay was struggling, it clicked when we needed it.”

Melfort now moves into sole possession of third place in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League with 39 points. The Mustangs host Humboldt on Friday to kick off Parent-Billet Weekend.
