Meadow Lake Mustangs sit out

Mustangs will not attend WSHL Showcase citing cost concerns

The Meadow Lake Mustangs will not be attending the Western States Hockey League (WSHL) Showcase this year.

The team’s general manager, Glen Winkler, said cost plays a major factor in sitting out of the four-day trip to Las Vegas.

“We’re the team that’s the farthest away from the tournament and it costs us close to $26,000 to go down to the tournament and we aren’t able to do that this year for three games,” Winkler told meadowlakeNOW. “It’s more resources than we have.”

Winkler said players had opportunities to be scouted by post-secondary hockey teams when they attended the tournament last year but no one from the team had done that.

“All of our games are televised by Black Dog Hockey, every home and away game is recorded. That opportunity to play university hockey is still there,” he said. “Coaches already had calls about our players so scouts can watch a game anytime they want. All 44 games are recorded rather than three so it’s not a big barrier.”

The Mustangs are out and about in the community but when it comes to fundraising, the team takes a conservative approach.

“There are a lot of causes in Meadow Lake and we’re not trying to step on anyone’s toes too much. If people want to support the team, the easiest way is to come out and watch the games,” Winkler said.

Winkler went on to say the players were understanding about the missed tournament and agreed that tournament costs could be spent elsewhere.

The Mustangs will play against Barrhead on Friday at 7:30 p.m., the Edson Aeros on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 7:30 p.m. and again on Sunday, Dec. 8 at 2 p.m.
