Three officers hired by La Ronge taxpayers arrive

Three new RCMP officers focused almost entirely on La Ronge have begun duties in the municipality.

Constables Engel, MacDonald and Moore were all deployed in town when its enhanced policing agreement with the RCMP came into effect Dec. 1. The three-year, nearly $1.2 million contract was agreed to back in October and is in addition to the $202,000 the town already pays for policing services each year.

“Their duties are assigned almost solely to the community of La Ronge and, under the agreement, the town has had some specific duties they would like the officers to be involved in,” said Acting-Staff Sgt. Josh Hallett. “The big thing right now is they are increasing the patrols in the community within the residential and commercial areas.”

Since beginning duties this month, the officers have been meeting with business owners and getting to know the downtown core. Hallett stated some have also taken part in violent threat risk assessment training to assist the schools when they are needed.

Unless there is an officer who is either sick or participating in training, Hallett mentioned a town officer will be on duty during the day shift and night shift, while the other is on a period of time off.

“I think it’s going to benefit both the community and the detachment in the sense they’re going to get a specific policing service,” he said. “There will be the rare occasion when there is an extreme emergency that comes up they are going to have to go help.”

While the contract is set for three years, the town does have the option of cancelling it with a one-year notice. The officers also have to dedicate at least 70 per cent of their on-duty time to town responsibilities.

“I know it has been in the works for a while, and there was a lot of planning and research done on it on our end and by the town as well,” Hallett said.
