NBCHS junior basketball teams look to stay hot at home tournament this weekend

The North Battleford Comprehensive High School (NBCHS) junior basketball teams are hosting their annual joint tournament ahead of the Christmas holidays, this weekend at the high school gymnasium.

Featuring four teams from the region, the weekend’s action will be an exhibition tournament.

Melfort & Unit Comprehensive High School, and Bishop Lloyd Middle School will make the trip from out of town to attend, while John Paul II Collegiate (JPII) will also face off with their cross-town rivals.

Although no medals will be at stake, head coach of the junior boys, Jeff Gibson said the action should still offer a nice opportunity to see how the teams stack up against some of their top rivals in the conference.

The NBCHS junior girls, will enter the weekend looking to stay hot after opening the season with a gold medal finish in Melfort last weekend.

Going undefeated on their way to the tournament win, the girls defeated both the hometown Comets and JPII on their way to snagging the first place title by 10 points in their final game.

Meanwhile, the junior boys also kicked off their schedule last weekend with a podium finish, bringing home a bronze medal.

Adding fuel to the fire, the Vikings’ boys will get a shot at redemption against the same Melfort club that defeated them in their semi-final matchup by just a single point in overtime, costing them their shot at the gold.

“It was a good game, so facing off against Melfort this weekend it will be kind of fun to see how we do matched up against them once again,” Gibson said. “JPII also won that tournament last weekend, so they’re a strong team once again too.”

Gibson added with the additional excitement that comes from playing the role of hosts, the players should be eager to make an impression in front of friends, family and peers in front of the hometown crowd.

The NBCHS junior boys will open the tournament Friday with an ‘all Battlefords’ matchup against JPII at 3:30 p.m. The girls will then take the court to follow with their opening game.
