Project Poinsettia tradition returns to Meadow Lake

Project Poinsettia is a holiday tradition bringing Christmas cheer to residents in hospitals and long-term care facilities in northern Saskatchewan.

CJNS and meadowlakeNOW delivered the 110 festive plants to patients at Northland Pioneer Lodge and Meadow Lake Hospital. The flowers were sponsored by Milbank Flowers and the Christmas Cards by Ultra Print.

“[These donations] make everyone feel better at Christmas time. Being in the hospital around Christmas is not the joyous occasion that it should be. This makes everyone smile and feel better,” Angela Reid, Director of acute care for the Northwest Saskatchewan Health Authority told meadowlakeNOW.

Reid said staff have been busy decorating the hospital to lift everyone’s spirits and the poinsettia donations added an extra something to patient bedrooms.

Q98 FM started the project a number of years back for the Battlefords but the program grew in 2017 to encompass the entire Prairie North Health Region.

Unfortunately an influenza-A outbreak announced Monday at Northwest Pioneer Lodge halted social events and visitors this week, so meadowlakeNOW was unable to speak with any of the poinsettia recipients.

The gesture from Discovery Co-op, Anderson Pump House Ltd., Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs and Holm Raiche and Oberg Professional Accountants had a positive impact on residents at the lodge according to activities worker, Jackie Albers.

“It’s nice that the community remembers our seniors. It’s a very nice gesture. With the outbreak, everyone has been a little down. It definitely picked up their spirits. They were very excited and very pleased,” Albers said.

Doug Dahl, communications officer with Saskatchewan Health Authority, said Lodge visitors were encouraged to reschedule visiting until the outbreak is over.
