There was no shortage of holiday cheer at the 2019 La Ronge and District Filipino – Canadian Community Christmas Party.

The event was held at the La Ronge Senior Citizens Club and it attracted close to 150 people. According to one of the organizers Sonny Montilla, Christmas is a very important time of the year for Filipinos, stating back in the Philippines the celebration lasts from Sept. 1 to Jan. 6.

“It’s a big deal. The majority of Filipinos are Christians and celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ,” he said. “This time the majority of Filipino people showed up. It was very exciting that night. The excitement was double compared to last year.”

Throughout the event, there were many activities to part take in and there was a performance by the Filipino Choir. There was also a lot of food including an entire roast pig. Montilla noted the party was held to celebrate the spirit of Christmas, which he said is about forgiveness, love, respect and giving.

“We invited NDP MLA Doyle Vermette as well outside the political world as a friend,” Montilla said. “We invited him and Coun. Jordan McPhail. We exchanged gifts for the kids and, as usual, the kids were very excited about Santa Claus. We had a Filipino who became Santa Claus and gave gifts to the kids.”
