Man starts GoFundMe after losing belongings in fire

A local man is trying to get back on his feet after losing everything he owned to a fire along Big Stone Road.

The incident occurred Dec. 12 around 2:30 p.m. and it was reportedly caused by the tenant of a home who was attempting to thaw his waterlines. Sacha Poirier told larongeNOW he was using a tiger torch to heat the waterlines under a trailer. He said he left it unattended and the torch must have ignited the bottom somehow.

“I didn’t notice, then when I came back, it was completely engulfed in flames and black smoke,” Poirier said. “It’s pretty much gone.”

Poirier launched a GoFundMe account on Dec. 16 and is seeking up to $10,000 to replace the belongings lost in the fire. He noted the fire consumed everything he and his six-year-old son Sebastian own including clothing, toys, games, a guitar and amplifier collection, electronics and Christmas presents. There were also irreplaceable family keepsakes in the home that were lost.

It’s been a pretty hard time of the year for such an incident to occur, Poirier said, adding he doesn’t have tenant insurance to cover the cost of what burned. If anyone has donations suitable for his son like clothing or toys, he added they can be dropped off at Eagle Point.

“It’s more him I’m concerned about than myself, and the things that are irreplaceable like family heirlooms,” Poirier said. “Everyone should be careful with fire and be a little bit more smarter than I was that’s for sure.”

larongeNOW reached out to La Ronge Regional Fire Department Acting-Chief Keaton Cloud, who said the incident remains under investigation as of publishing.
