Mild end to 2019

Warm stretch of weather continues as calendar flips

Dec 31, 2019 | 1:00 PM

The warm weather we have experienced over the past few weeks will continue as we ring in 2020.

Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Eric Dykes told northeastNOW conditions will remain nice until the weekend.

“The forecast is essentially ‘what you see is what you get’ for the next couple of days basically for the Melfort region,” Dykes said. ” [There will be ] cloudy skies, a chance for some fog patches in the early morning and the early overnight period, and a slight chance of flurries with temperatures remaining above seasonal.”

The average high for this time of year is -14 C, with normal lows around -25 C. The high is expected to be -3 C or -4 C until Friday and Saturday, when it drops a little to -7 C.

The warmer weather will continue to mean some fog and frost in the region over the next few days.

“We’re seeing highs around -4 C or -3 C and that allows for just a little bit of melting to occur, and that melting…stays in the atmosphere overnight,” said Dykes. “That can help to create the frost and some of the fog that we see.”

Dykes said there is a system that is coming through on Saturday that is expected to bring about 5 cm of snow to the region.

“Once the snow dissipates and moves into Manitoba late Saturday night, behind that low pressure system we’re expecting temperatures to drop back to normal once again, so highs around mid-minus teens once again for the latter half of the weekend,” Dykes explained.

The system coming through on Saturday isn’t expected to produce much wind along with the snow, but Dykes said with the amount of snow it could still lead to reduced visibility and other travel issues.
