Hawks get revenge on Mustangs

Mustangs give up two goal lead to Hawks, fall in overtime

Jan 5, 2020 | 9:26 AM

The second half of the home and home between the Melfort Mustangs and Nipawin Hawks on Saturday, Jan. 4 at the Northern Lights Palace was definitely an entertaining one.

The Mustangs opened the scoring just seven minutes in, as Tyson Meyers wacked home a loose puck in front of the Nipawin net. The Hawks came back with two goals of their own as Brodie Girod and Jeremy Bisson scored in the final 10 minutes of the frame to take a 2-1 lead.

Melfort only had three recorded shots in the first period, but came back hard in the second. A Nolan Kadachuk powerplay goal was followed up by a Christian Albertson marker just under a minute later to make it 3-2. That goal chased Hawks netminder Dalton Dosch who allowed three goals on 11 shots in just over 27 minutes.

Ross Hawryluk came in for Nipawin, but the Mustangs got to him early too, as Colton Schell made a nice play to shake off a defender and beat Hawryluk to extend the Mustangs lead to 4-2. Bronson Adams scored with less than a minute to go in the second to make it 4-3, setting up an interesting third period.

The Hawks came out like gangbusters in the third period as they fired a total of 17 shots at Mustang goalie Shawn Parkinson. The only one that got by him came with just 48 seconds to play in the third, as Jake Tremblay fired a wrist shot by Parkinson to tie the hockey game.

In overtime, both teams got a handful of chances before Jordan Simoneau got caught behind the Mustangs who were changing. Simoneau had a partial break into the left wing circle and his wrist shot beat Parkinson to give the Hawks the come from behind win.

Melfort still managed to gain a point with the overtime loss. Their next action is Wednesday, Jan. 8 when they take on the Flin Flon Bombers in Melfort.
