Mustangs make two trades on defence ahead of SJHL trade deadline

The Melfort Mustangs made a few trades on Tuesday, Jan. 7, just days before the Jan. 10 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League trade deadline.

The Mustangs acquired 2000-born-defenceman Vaclav Prospal from the Sherwood Park Crusaders of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL). In five games with the Crusaders this season, Prospal had one assist. Last season, Prospal was played in the Czech Republic for Motor Ceske Budejovice U20. In 39 games in the Czech U19 league, he had 10 points.

The Ottawa native has connections to the Czech Republic as his dad is Vaclav Prospal, a former National Hockey Leaguer who played over 1,100 games in the league. The son also spent some time playing in the American minor hockey ranks.

The Mustangs sent a Player Development Fee (PDF) to Sherwood Park in the deal.

Meanwhile, as the Mustangs add a defenceman, they also moved one out, trading 2001-born Colby Brett to the Kindersley Klippers. Brett, a Phoenix, AZ native, came to Melfort at the start of the season and played in 34 games, scoring two goals and adding six assists. Brett was also notorious on the Mustang blue line for his seismic bodychecks.

Melfort received a PDF in return for Brett. It’s the second time this year the Mustangs and Klippers have hooked up on a trade as Melfort acquired Kyle Bosch and Austin Nault from them back in November.

The Mustangs are back in SJHL action on Wednesday, Jan. 8 when they host the Sherwood Division leading Flin Flon Bombers.
