Cold snap expected to continue while vulnerable sector at risk of exposure

The Meadow Lake region is experiencing its first extreme cold weather warning of the season.

Terri Lang, meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada told meadowlakeNOW the cold blast of -40 Celsius temperatures will pick up again after the weekend.

“Next week we’re going to dip into more cold temps and it does look like it’s going to be even colder than what we’re experiencing right now. Overnight lows will be dipping closer to -40 C mark once again with wind chills equally as high. It’s going to be around at least until next weekend,” Lang said.

Lang suggests wearing layers of clothing and to make sure hands, face, head and feet are well protected and covered.

“With these types of conditions, frostbite can occur very quickly. If people don’t have to be outside, they shouldn’t be,” Lang said. “Have an emergency kit in the car so if something were to happen, you’re prepared and always check the Highway Hotline before heading out.”

Vulnerable community at-risk

The Door of Hope food bank serves nearly 120 people in need within the Meadow Lake region on any given day.

Natanis Davidsen, the Door of Hope’s director, said most people this winter are looking for mittens, jackets and hats and boots during cold months. Donations are desperately needed especially during the colder months.

“We’ve experienced a bit of an increase of people dropping those things off but the need doesn’t go away,” she said.

Davidsen said those without necessary clothing to survive the elements are staying indoors and likely suffering. The service helps those who have nowhere to go or nothing to eat during freezing temperatures.

She said the goal is to provide delivery services to seniors, single parents, and people in the community who are unable to get the food bank during cold temperatures.
