For Ice Wolves’ forward, Daylon Mannon, his first year in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) has been a whirlwind.

A product of Fresno, California, Mannon spent last year in the North American Hockey League (NAHL) and wasted no time fitting right in as one of the Saskatchewan League’s elite, upon arriving across the border with La Ronge this season.

Mannon leads the Ice Wolves in virtually every offensive statistic through 45 games. The 20-year-old’s 27 goals are third-most in the league, while his 61 points places him fourth overall in league scoring at the time of the Showcase.

Because of his stellar season, Mannon was one of four La Ronge Ice Wolves’ players selected to represent their team at the annual joint-league, SJHL/MJHL Showcase.

“It has been [going] really well,” Mannon said Wednesday. “Just being with a lot of new guys, playing with different guys from around the league and learning from them too; to see where they come from, it has been a good experience.”

Mannon’s play this season has been a key element to revitalizing the Ice Wolves’ franchise into a team that can contend.

Last season La Ronge finished twelfth of the twelve teams in the Saskatchewan League, with just twelve wins all season. This year, the Ice Wolves currently sit fourth in the SJHL, with a 23-17-5 record, heading down the stretch drive of the regular season.

Mannon said he is proud to be a part of the Ice Wolves’ organization and their rejuvenation this season. He said the comradery amongst the group – both on and off the ice – has been key to the team’s quick turnaround.

“When you look back in the past, they have had a couple of tough years, but I think this year is different,” he said. “We are tight and we are like brothers in there. We work for each other and we fight for each other, so I think that’s the big difference.”

As for his biggest take away from showcase this season, the 20-year-old said it was special to get to know some of the top players on opposing teams, such as division rivals, Flin Flon and Nipawin specifically.

When asked if there was any extra ribbing amongst opposing players from teams within the division, Mannon couldn’t help but let out a smile.

“At the supper table, maybe a little bit, but it’s all fun and games,” he said with a laugh.
