Great Western’s latest beer features honey from Tisdale area

Great Western Brewing Company in Saskatoon came out with its newest ‘one-off batch’ of beer just a couple months ago, and it features some local flavour.

The Honey Brown Lager features honey from a bee farm in the Tisdale area, as well as hops from Moosomin, and malted barley from Rosthern.

“It’s kind of a balance of a rich bready maltness, with moderate bitterness,” Great West Vice President of Operations Allan Genest said. “Which gives it a crisp dry finish.”

The thought to go to Tisdale for the honey came from an employee at Great Western who is friends with a local bee farmer.

Genest added having these limited time batches allows them as a brewery to create a bit of ‘craftiness’ and to just experiment. He said making sure the ingredients are from Saskatchewan is important because it supports those who support them in the province.

“If we can compile a beer that’s made with ingredients from local farms, why wouldn’t we?” Genest told northeastNOW. “It’s a fantastic feel for us to say ‘ You know what. this is 100 per cent Saskatchewan’, right down to all the ingredients the hops, the malts, the honey, made right here in Saskatoon.”

He said the response has been good so far on the Honey Brown Lager, and they only have about 30 kegs left to sell.

Once they’re gone though, Genest didn’t rule out the thought it could come back if one sells particularly well.

“Absolutely we’d consider how we would scale it up and supply it again,” he said.
