Public works tow cars obstructing snow removal

Meadow Lake experienced more snowfall last week and city workers are diligently removing windrows as quickly as possible.

City Manager Diana Burton said due to the snow buildup, city staff are towing vehicles parked on streets for more than 24 hours.

“We have a rule about parking for areas that aren’t marked, say two-hour parking on the side of a residential street, that you can’t stay parked for more than 24 hours,” Burton said.

The issue was brought to councillor’s attention on Monday. The concern is emergency responders may have an issue moving through city streets if snow covered cars are obstructing roads.

Burton said the public works manager or bylaw will visit the location, mark tires and check later to see if the vehicles were moved.

“Sometimes, it’s really obvious when you have a snowfall and four days later there’s still a foot of snow on a vehicle that hasn’t moved,” Burton said.

Burton was unable to confirm before deadline whether the city issues parking tickets to vehicles impeding snow removal before towing.

City council will meet next on Feb. 10.
