Dorintosh Wildlife Banquet honours community hunting efforts

Dorintosh Wildlife Federation is hosting its 25th annual wildlife banquet.

“The original purpose is a fundraiser and an awards ceremony,” Shaena Thomson, 22, who is a member and volunteer of the federation told meadowlakeNOW. “The awards go to members who submit their entries for harvest throughout the year.”

The focus of the fundraiser is getting the community together for dinner and a night of good company for all ages.

Thompson said one fun activity planned for the evening is the moose-shoot where kids shoot Nerf guns at tin cans attached to a moose cutout. There are also awards for kids who have caught fish or other small animals.

“Every year is a little different where big game donations are made by community members. Bear, moose, turkey, ham and bison meatballs are on the menu so far,” she said. “Sometimes we get crazy things. One year we had a lynx. No one has donated a lynx since.”

Thomson said the game meat arrives months in advance to permit nightly curings of it.

“This is one of those events in the area where people know that it’s happening,” Thomson said.

The all-you-can-eat game buffet is on Feb. 1 at the Dorintosh Hall beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Tickets are still available at the Sikup General Store in Dorintosh or The Generals in Meadow Lake.
