Battlefords Pride members pleased with support for fundraiser gala

Battlefords Pride members were pleased to see their fundraiser gala was a success.

While blustery weather with snow and freezing rain made for poor driving, many people still managed to attend the event.

The dinner, dance and show held at the Don Ross Centre Saturday garnered about $3,000 in support.

“Despite the weather, I think we had around 100 people there,” committee member Kelly Waters said, adding there were a number of ticket sales at the door to help bring the tally up.

Funds raised will go toward developing a LGBT-positive safe-space drop-in centre in the community.

Waters said the group was hoping to make a little more than what was actually realized but since this was their first fundraiser they are satisfied with the outcome. They expect to have even better results next time.

“We were just happy we were able to successfully come out ahead on this and raise some awareness in a big way that was positive for the LGBT community,” she said.

Waters said she also hopes more people join the Battlefords Pride committee to show their support.

Among those attending the gala was Lt.-Gov. Russell Mirasty.

“Part of it is just bringing that understanding of the gay community to the rest of the province, even to myself. I’m glad to be here,” he said, adding he hopes the event helps promote acceptance.

Town of Battleford Coun. Judy Pruden who attended with Coun. Shelley Boutin-Gervais said the cause is an important one.

“One of our core values is for diversity and inclusivity in town,” she said. “We’re just really proud to come and represent the mayor, and bring greetings on his behalf.”
